Question for the watch gurus. Ever since that dude struck it big with the rare Goodwill watch, I've been curious. Who actually shops for watches at goodwill, and is there anything decent to be found?
my decade old ESQ is getting tired, and I would like to diversify on the cheap.

I wouldn't make a career out of it. A lot of those super finds come from someone who owned a nice watch passing, and their significant others turn the watches in with other personal items as donations, but now most people look up what watches are worth. You can always look though. I found a rare pocket watch with rear-facing automatic calendar after looking in an antique shop.

Yeah, it's worse now with the internet, but even back in the day I worked at our church's thrift store and there were trolls who would rummage through our shit every morning looking for something to flip. I imagine it's lottery style odds to find something of significant value and low price at a Goodwill/Salvation Army/Thrift Store today.

I would guess it would be a needle in a haystack type of situation. You can probably find a good one once in a while, but I don't care to spend that much time and the smells in those stores generally turn me off.
